Antetokounmpo, Giannis
Biography, Height, Brothers, Stats, & Facts
Giannis Antetokounmpo, original name Giannis Adetokunbo, nickname Greek Freak, (born December 6, 1994, Athens, Greece), Greek professional basketball player who led the Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA to a championship in 2021.
Adetokunbo was born in Athens, the son of Nigerian immigrants who had no legal status in Greece. Giannis and three of his four brothers were considered stateless because the country did not grant birthright citizenship. In addition to financial difficulties, the family faced xenophobia and fear of deportation. To supplement their income, Adetokunbo occasionally sold items, including sunglasses and watches, on the streets of Athens.
At age 13 Giannis and his brothers—three of whom (Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex) would go on to become professional basketball players—caught the eye of a local coach. They began playing basketball, and three years later Giannis joined Filathlitikos, a professional team in Greece. With his size (he eventually reached a height of 6 feet 11 inches [2.1 metres]) and speed, he soon attracted the attention of NBA scouts. In 2013 he was drafted by the Bucks as the 15th overall pick. About this time he also gained Greek citizenship, which enabled him to travel to the United States. The family subsequently changed their surname to Antetokounmpo.
Antetokounmpo made his NBA debut during the 2013–14 season. Although the Bucks struggled over the next few years, Antetokounmpo showed progress, and in 2016–17 he had a breakthrough season, earning the league’s Most Improved Player award. A versatile forward, he was praised for both his offensive and defensive play. The Bucks made the playoffs that season but lost in the first round. During the 2017–18 season, the team fired coach Jason Kidd and later hired Mike Budenholzer. With the coaching change and Antetokounmpo’s strong play, Milwaukee finished the 2018–19 season with the best record in the league. Antetokounmpo was named the NBA’s MVP, averaging 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists. The team, however, had a disappointing playoffs, losing in the conference finals. The Bucks again posted the best record in the league in 2019–20 but lost in the second round of the playoffs. That season Antetokounmpo won his second MVP award and was named Defensive Player of the Year; he was the third person to win both honours in the same season.
In the 2020–21 season the Bucks entered the playoffs as the third seed in the Eastern Conference. After overcoming multiple series deficits, Milwaukee reached the title round, and there Antetokounmpo put on one of the most dominating performances in finals history. Although the team lost the first two games to the Phoenix Suns, Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to four straight victories, and in the deciding game six he scored an astounding 50 points. The franchise claimed its second championship, and Antetokounmpo was named MVP of the finals, averaging 35.2 points, 13.2 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game for the series.
