Antlia, (Latin: “Pump”) constellation in the southern sky at about 10 hours right ascension and 30° south in declination. Its brightest star is Alpha Antliae, with a magnitude of 4.3. The French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille formed this constellation in 1754; it represents an air pump of the type used in 18th-century physics and chemistry experiments. The constellation was originally called Antlia Pneumatica (Latin: “Air Pump”).
