Clare, town, southeastern South Australia, 80 miles (130 km) north of Adelaide. Clare was founded in 1842 by Edward Gleeson, who named it for his homeland in Ireland. Jesuits at nearby Sevenhill established one of the first vineyards in the district. Grapes for table use and wine making, along with other fruits, grains, livestock, and dairy products, form the basis of the local economy. Declared a municipality in 1868, Clare is the site of a reserve for “stringybark” eucalyptus trees. Pop. (2006) 3,063; (2011) gazetted locality, 3,277.
