San Francisco Bay, large, nearly landlocked bay indenting western California, U.S. It is a drowned river valley paralleling the coastline and is connected with the Pacific Ocean by a strait called the Golden Gate, which is spanned by the Golden Gate Bridge. San Francisco Bay is 60 miles (97 km) long and 3 to 12 miles (5 to 19 km) wide and is one of the world’s finest natural harbours. Treasure, Yerba Buena, Angel, and Alcatraz islands lie in it, and several bridges connect its eastern and western shores. Around the bay are San Francisco, Oakland, and a band of contiguous metropolitan subcentres linked by the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART).
