Bhatpara

Bhatpara, West Bengal, India

Bhatpara, city, southeastern West Bengal state, northeastern India. It lies on the east bank of the Hugli (Hooghly) River opposite Chandannagar (Chandernagore), in the northern part of the Kolkata (Calcutta) urban agglomeration.

Bhatpara is an ancient seat of Sanskrit learning, with several schools called tols. It was constituted a municipality in 1899, when it was separated from Naihati municipality. The city is connected by road and rail with Kolkata and other cities in the region and is a major jute-, cotton-, and paper-milling centre. Pop. (2001) 442,385; (2011) 383,762.
