Comitán: church of Guadalupe
Comitán, in full Comitán de Domínguez, city, east-central Chiapas estado (state), southeastern Mexico. It was formerly known as Comitán de las Flores because of its profusion of tropical flowers. The city lies at 5,020 feet (1,530 metres) above sea level on the central plateau of Chiapas and east-southeast of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the state capital. It is a commercial centre for a region that produces corn (maize), bananas, avocados, and other crops, forest products, and livestock. The principal industries are distilleries and textile mills. Only 52 miles (83 km) from the border with Guatemala, the city has a customs house. It is on the Pan-American Highway and has an airfield. Lagunas de Montebello National Park is a short distance to the southeast, near the Guatemalan border. Pop. (2000) 70,311; (2010) 97,537.
