Benjamin Gerritsz. Cuyp, in full Benjamin Gerritszoon Cuyp, Cuyp also spelled Cuijp, (born December 1612, Dordrecht, Netherlands—died August 28, 1652, Dordrecht), Dutch artist who painted landscapes, genre scenes, battle pieces, and religious subjects in a Baroque style that appears to have been influenced by Rembrandt’s dramatic use of chiaroscuro. His nephew Aelbert Cuyp and his uncle Jacob Gerritszoon Cuyp were both noted painters.
