Campos dos Goytacazes, also spelled Campos dos Goitacazes, also called Campos, city, northeastern Rio de Janeiro estado (state), eastern Brazil. It is located 35 miles (56 km) up the Paraíba do Sul River from its mouth on the Atlantic coast of eastern Brazil, at 43 feet (13 metres) above sea level. One of the most important commercial cities of the state, it produces sugarcane, coffee, rice, corn (maize), and feijão (beans) and processes alcohol and livestock products. Offshore in the Atlantic, the deepwater oil fields of the Campos Basin are the largest of Brazil’s oil reserves. The city has road and rail connections with Rio de Janeiro, Vitória in the state of Espírito Santo, and the cities in the Paraíba valley. Campos dos Goytacazes is also accessible by river and by air. The city is home to two rival football (soccer) clubs, each of which has its own stadium. Pop. (2010) 463,731.
