Glen Innes, town, northeastern New South Wales, Australia, located in the New England district on the Northern Tableland south of the Queensland border. Founded in 1851 on Furracabad stock station, it became a municipality in 1872. Glen Innes is located high in the New England Range at an elevation of about 3,484 feet (1,062 metres), near the crest of the range. The town is intersected by the Gwydir Highway, which passes through from Grafton to Moree and links to the Newell Highway. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, in particular on the raising of beef cattle, sheep, and lambs, as well as on wool production and beekeeping. The service (especially tourism) and retail sectors are also important. Pop. (2006) local government area, 8,780; (2011) local government area, 8,656.
