Fogo Island

Fogo Island, Portuguese Ilha do Fogo, island of Cabo Verde, in the Atlantic Ocean, about 400 miles (640 km) off the West African coast between the islands of Santiago and Brava. The island’s active volcano, Pico (9,281 feet [2,829 metres]), is the highest point of the archipelago. Peanuts (groundnuts), beans, coffee, oranges, and tobacco are grown on the north and west sides of the island. The chief town is São Filipe, on the west shore. Area 184 square miles (475 square km). Pop. (2005 est.) 37,861.
