Hayman Island
Hayman Island, northernmost of the Cumberland Islands, at the northern entrance to Whitsunday Passage (Coral Sea), off northeastern Queensland, Australia. An inshore coral-fringed continental island, it measures 2 miles (3 km) by 1 1/2 miles (2.5 km) and has an area of 960 acres (390 hectares). From red granite coastal cliffs, 200 feet (60 m) high, it rises to more than 840 feet (255 m) in forested hills. It is one of the best-known resorts of the Great Barrier Reef. It was designated a national park in 1941 and is a bird sanctuary.
