Jorhat, town, northeastern Assam state, northeastern India. It lies along a tributary of the Brahmaputra River, about 30 miles (50 km) southwest of Sibsagar.
Jorhat is a road and rail junction and is the commercial centre of a productive agricultural area. The town is noted for jewelry manufacture and is the site of Assam Agricultural University. In the late 18th century Jorhat was the capital of an independent Ahom kingdom; the Ahoms, a Tai-speaking people, migrated from Yunnan province, China, beginning about the 1st century ce. Kaziranga National Park, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985, is located about 60 miles (100 km) west of the town. Pop.
