Garden City, city, seat (1883) of Finney county, southwestern Kansas, U.S. It lies on the Arkansas River. Founded in 1878, it acquired its name through the suggestion of a visitor who admired a local flower garden. The city is the centre of an irrigated agricultural area of the Arkansas River valley known for its alfalfa, wheat, grain sorghum, sugar beets, and livestock. The city’s chief industries include meatpacking, food processing, machine shops, and the manufacture of brick and tile. Natural gas and oil are produced in the vicinity. Garden City Community College was established in 1919. Lee Richardson Zoo, located within Finnup Park, is the state’s largest zoo. The Finney Game Refuge just south of the city protects a large buffalo herd. Inc. 1883. Pop. (2000) 28,451; (2010) 26,658.
