Kariya, city, southwest-central Aichi ken (prefecture), central Honshu, Japan. The city is situated at the head of an estuary opening into Chita Bay and is a short distance southeast of Nagoya.

It was founded as a small castle town in 1533 by the Mizuno clan and was passed to various daimyo families during the Edo (Tokugawa) period (1603–1867). The city became a station on the rail line to Nagoya in 1888. Kariya was the site of a loom-manufacturing factory, founded there by Toyoda Sakichi in the 1930s, that was a precursor to the Toyota Motor Corporation, which now has its headquarters in nearby Toyota. The city produces automobile parts as well as textile and farm machinery and ceramic tiles. Pop. (2010) 145,781; (2015) 149,765.
