Elizabeth Keckley, also spelled Elizabeth Keckly, original name Elizabeth Hobbs, (born February 1818, Dinwiddie county, Virginia, U.S.—died May 26, 1907, Washington, D.C.), American dressmaker, author, and philanthropist who purchased her and her son’s freedom from slavery and who later became the modiste for first lady Mary Todd Lincoln.
