Scotland
East Kilbride, burgh (town), South Lanarkshire council area, historic county of Lanarkshire, Scotland. It was Scotland’s first post-World War II planned new town, built around the old pastoral village of East Kilbride to accommodate residential and commercial growth from nearby Glasgow. The name suggests early Celtic association with St. Bride (Brigit). Industries include food processing, light engineering, and manufacture. The National Engineering Laboratory (which was sold to the TÜV SÜD group in 1995) is located there. Pop. (2001) 73,990; (2011) 74,400.
