loquat

loquat, (Eriobotrya japonica), also known as Japanese medlar, subtropical tree of the rose family (Rosaceae) grown for its evergreen foliage and edible fruit. The loquat is native to central eastern China. It was introduced to Japan more than 1,000 years ago, where it was developed horticulturally and is still highly valued. Some superior Japanese varieties reached Europe, the Mediterranean, and a few other regions. The plant is grown commercially (usually on a rather small scale) in many subtropical regions. Ornamental in appearance, it is frequently planted in parks and gardens. The fruits are high in fibre, vitamin A, and antioxidants and are commonly eaten fresh.
