white mustard, (Sinapis alba), also known as yellow mustard, annual herbaceous plant of the family Brassicaceae grown primarily for its pungent seeds, which are a source of the condiment known as mustard. Native to the Mediterranean region, white mustard has naturalized throughout much of the world and is an agricultural weed and invasive species in some areas outside its native range. White mustard seeds are less intensely flavoured than those of brown mustard (Brassica juncea) and are used in milder American- or German-type mustard pastes. In addition to the use of mustard as a condiment, the plant is also grown as a green manure and fodder crop, and the young seedlings can be eaten fresh as sprouts.
