Caazapá, town, southern Paraguay. Founded in 1607 by Friar Bolaños, the town is situated on the edge of the westward extension of the Brazilian Highlands, including the Cordillera (mountains) de Ybytyruzú. Caazapá is a lumbering and agricultural centre, and tanneries are also located there. The town has a regional hospital, various educational institutions including an agricultural college, and a monument to Bolaños. Caazapá can be reached by paved highway from Asunción. Pop. (2002) urban area, 5,990.
