quandong nut

quandong, (Santalum acuminatum), also called desert quandong, sweet quandong, or native peach, small hemiparasitic tree of the sandalwood family (Santalaceae), useful for its edible fruit and seeds. The plant is native to Australia and has a long history of use by Aboriginal peoples. The nutritious red pulpy flesh of the fruit has a distinctive flavour and is used in jams, pies, and chutneys. The hard-shelled edible seeds, known as quandong nuts, are customarily roasted but also can be eaten raw. Given that the tree is a partial root parasite, cultivation is difficult and has largely been experimental.
