Ubon Ratchathani, town, eastern Thailand, on the Khorat Plateau. It lies near the confluence of the Mun and Chi Rivers and is a major trading centre for rice, cattle, and tobacco. A road leads east to Pakxe (Laos) on the Mekong River.
The area in which Ubon Ratchathani is situated produces rice, freshwater fish, cattle, pigs, sugarcane, timber, and cotton. There are large numbers of Lao (Laotian) and Khmer (Cambodian) peoples in the area. Apart from Ubon Ratchathani, the main towns in the region include Warin Chamrap (which is the eastern terminus of the railway from Bangkok) and Phibun Mangsahan. Pop. (2003 est.) town, 106,552.
