Rauvolfia

Rauvolfia, also spelled Rauwolfia, genus of plants in the dogbane family (Apocynaceae), with 110 species of shrubs and trees native to tropical areas of the world. The flowers are small and usually white or greenish white in colour.
The roots of many species contain an alkaloid called reserpine, first found in the Indian species R. serpentina and used in the treatment of high blood pressure and as a tranquilizer. Some are grown as ornamentals.
