Dimitrovgrad: church of St. George
Dimitrovgrad, formerly (until 1972) Melekess, city, eastern Ulyanovsk oblast (region), western Russia. The city is situated at the confluence of the Melekes and Bolshoy (Great) Cheremshan rivers.
It was founded in 1714 and became a town in 1919. It is an agricultural processing centre, with sawmilling and metalworking industries, and it also has an atomic research centre. A teacher-training college is located in the city. Pop. (2010) 122,580; (2014 est.) 118,513.
