Sabinas, city, north-central Coahuila estado (state), northeastern Mexico. It lies on the Sabinas River north of Saltillo, the state capital, at an elevation of 1,115 feet (340 metres) above sea level. It is the commercial and manufacturing centre for the area, in which wheat and nuts are grown and cattle and goats are raised. Best known as a rail junction and shipping centre for the Sabinas coal district, the city has coking plants that supply coke for the steel mills in Monterrey. The city has a coal museum. The main highway between Piedras Negras and Mexico City passes through Sabinas, which is also on the rail line between Piedras Negras and Escalón in Chihuahua state. Domestic airlines serve the city. Sabinas is where revolutionary Pancho Villa signed a peace treaty with the Mexican government in 1920. Pop. (2005) 47,933; (2010) 54,905.
