Old Saybrook, town (township), Middlesex county, southern Connecticut, U.S. It lies on Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Connecticut River. The town includes the resort borough of Fenwick, Old Saybrook Center, and Saybrook Point. The latter was occupied in 1633 by the Dutch, but in 1635 a Puritan settlement, named Saybrook (for Lord Say and Sele and Lord Brooke, two land grantees), was established there under the auspices of an English company. The town was the site of the Collegiate School (forerunner of Yale University until its removal to New Haven in 1716). The town of Saybrook, of which Old Saybrook was a part (1644–1852), was abolished in 1947. There is some light manufacturing. Inc. 1854. Area 15 square miles (39 square km). Pop. (2000) 10,367; (2010) 10,242.
