Carl Wilhelm Scheele, Carl also spelled Karl, (born December 9, 1742, Stralsund, Pomerania [now in Germany]—died May 21, 1786, Köping, Sweden), German Swedish chemist who independently discovered oxygen, chlorine, and manganese.
