Serov, formerly (until 1939) Nadezhdinsk, city, Sverdlovsk oblast (region), western Russia. It lies along the Kakva River, a tributary of the Sosva River. The city developed in the 1890s into the largest pre-Revolutionary ironworking centre in the Ural Mountains, producing rails for the Trans-Siberian Railroad. Today, with a large, full-cycle iron and steel plant, it is the main centre of the northern Urals mining and metallurgical region. Pop. (2006 est.) 98,044.
