Sibolga, kota (city), western North Sumatra (Sumatera Utara) propinsi (or provinsi; province), Indonesia. It is located on Sumatra’s western coast about 130 miles (210 km) south of Medan, the provincial capital. Sibolga is a port on Sibolga Bay of the Indian Ocean and is linked by road with the cities of Tarutung and Pematangsiantar to the north and with Padangsidimpuan to the southeast. Although Sibolga was protected somewhat by Mursala Island, nearby to the southwest, it was among the Sumatran cities hardest hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004.

The city is home to an ethnically diverse population, primarily a mixture of Acehnese, Minangkabau, Batak, and coastal Malay. There are also notable numbers of Javanese and Bugis, as well as people of Indian, Arab, and Chinese ancestry. Sibolga has long served as a nexus for trade and services and as an important export station for rubber, coffee, timber, resin, camphor, copra, and other commodities. Industries include sawmilling, weaving, wood carving, and mat and basket making. Fisheries are also important. Pop. (2010) 84,481.
