SingStar, electronic game, or karaoke video game, developed by the Sony Corporation of Japan for two of its video-game consoles: the PlayStation 2 in 2004 and the PlayStation 3 in 2007. Designed to challenge the Guitar Hero and Rock Band market for music games, SingStar allows players to download and sing along with songs, gaining points for vocal accuracy.

SingStar provides two different coloured microphones, which players use to sing a multitude of songs in either single-player or multiplayer format. Singers earn points for precision and have the opportunity to score additional points for hitting certain notes and consistently staying on pitch. A camera, such as Sony’s PlayStation Eye, can be used to simulate a music video, putting the player into the game and on the screen, with the lyrics shown below their icon, or avatar. Players can compete against one another or perform duets. Additional songs are accessible through SingStar’s online archive, the SingStore. The SingStore has many tracks available for download, with new songs added regularly.

SingStar has released a library of different games that focus on individual genres of music. These include SingStar Rocks! (2006), SingStar Anthems (2006), SingStar Pop Hits (2007), SingStar 90s (2007), SingStar R&B (2007), and SingStar Singalong with Disney (2008). The vast majority of these were released for the PlayStation 2, with a handful on the PlayStation 3. SingStar has received generally positive reviews, especially in the multiplayer format. The game enjoys greater popularity in Australia and Europe than it does in the United States.
