Skagen, also called The Skaw, city and port, northern Jutland, Denmark, near the northern tip of the peninsula on the Kattegat strait. Chartered in 1413, it is one of the principal fishing centres in Denmark. It is also a summer resort and, from the 1870s, the site of an artists’ and writers’ colony. Notable are the Råbjerg Mile sand dunes to the south and the Old Church, which has been buried to the roof in sand since a storm in 1775. At the Grenen headland, the most northerly point of Denmark (2 miles [3 km] north), the Skagerrak (an arm of the North Sea) and the Kattegat meet. Pop. (2008 est.) 8,941.
