Krabbesholm: manor houseKrabbesholm: manor house

Skive, city, central Jutland, Denmark, on southeastern Salling Peninsula and Skive Fjord. It was mentioned in the 13th century and chartered in 1326. Skive has one of the busiest harbours on Limfjorden, and its industries include iron foundries, machine shops, meat-packing, tobacco factories, and fisheries. In the past it suffered greatly from fires, and the Romanesque Gamle Kirke (Old Church) is one of the few remaining old buildings. The 16th-century manor house of Krabbesholm, nearby, has since 1907 been a folk high school, a voluntary school for adult education. To the southwest are a national park (1934) and an open-air museum at Hjerlhede. Spøttrup, the 15th-century fortress of the bishops of Viborg, is 11 mi (18 km) northwest. Skive is the site of teachers’, technical, and commercial colleges. Pop. (2008 est.) city, 20,643; (2005 est.) mun., 48,368.
