Smila, Russian Smela, city, Ukraine, on the Tyasmyn (Tiasmyn) River. The city was first established as a Cossack settlement in the late 16th century. In 1793 it came under Russian rule, and in the 19th century it became a significant sugar-refining centre. In the 20th century it developed a large food industry and railway-servicing and engineering industries. Pop. (2001) 69,681; (2005 est.) 69,023.
