Wewoka, city, seat (1907) of Seminole county, east-central Oklahoma, U.S. Founded by the offspring of African Americans and Creek Indians in 1843, the town takes its name from a Creek village in Alabama whose meaning is “roaring water.” The Union Pacific Railroad Company established a station there in 1899; whites arrived in number in 1902, after the area was open to settlement by non-Indians. The Greater Seminole Oil Field was discovered nearby in 1923, attracting thousands of workers to the area; Wewoka’s population grew markedly until the Depression of the 1930s. The city is the headquarters of the Seminole Nation, some 7,000 of whose members live in the area. Inc. town, 1907; city, 1925. Pop. (2000) 3,562; (2010) 3,430.
