Elfin Woodland
Examples, & Facts
elfin woodland, also called elfin forest, dwarf forest, or pygmy forest, stunted forest at high elevations in tropical wet areas or temperate coastal areas. Its short gnarled trees are heavily draped with epiphytes (air plants), and its floor is cushioned by mosses and ferns. These forests typically are not very biodiverse, having only a limited number of woody species and vertebrate animals compared with surrounding forests at lower elevations. Globally, elfin woodlands are not a common ecosystem type. Some of the most expansive coastal elfin woodlands are found throughout parts of California, northern Mexico, and Oregon. A large tropical elfin woodland is found in Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary on Mindanao in the Philippines; the site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014.
Elfinwood, or krummholz, is a similar stunted forest characteristic of most Alpine regions nearing the tree line. See also cloud forest.
